Meet Dr. Stiltner, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Pikeville, KY
This page usually would list my degrees and credentials. However, that’s not want you want to read about (but if you do, I will list them at the end) you probably would like to know how I work with clients. I want this page to help you know if we will work together as a team.
You probably would like to know two major aspects of my practice. One… do I know what I am doing… and Two… what inspires me to work with children and adolescents (I do work with adults too). To answer one… Yes, I know what I am doing, I have almost a decade of work under my belt. I use strategies and techniques in sessions and also give “homework”…. Wait don’t stop reading (it’s not algebra homework)…it is strategies to apply to your life when you are not in session. Things you can practice and do in your day to day life. I have learned each client is unique with your own story, background, struggles and goals. I will work alongside of you and encourage you to be the person you wish to be. Now for answer two… I have always had a passion for working with children and adolescents. Children can be so vulnerable and susceptible to all the negativity in the world. I always considered myself a child advocate. Some children might misbehave due to several underlying reasons and some adults might think they are just acting out due to being “mean” and I strive to find the reasoning and understanding of the behaviors. Together, as a team, we will develop goals for time spent with me and we will pave new roads to get there. I can’t personally change you. Only You have the ability to change you and I am super excited to help support you.
Okay… now for how I work in session… I am not a therapist that sits back and just nods and smiles with every word (although, I may nod my head and smile at times). I have a great sense of humor and love to use it in session, unless it is inappropriate. I have good “Bull Detector” so I will call you out on it. Being open and honest is the best practice while in session. I do not judge and I provide a safe place to become comfortable in speaking the truth. We can talk about anything; Fears, Money, Sex, Dreams, Health, Birth, Any topic under the Sun…. Let’s get it all out on the table.
I hold a doctoral degree in Psychology (PhD) and am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and have been practicing for nearly a decade. I work with individuals, families, and couples, both, short-term and long-term psychotherapy. I specialize in working with individuals with substance abuse issues, relationship issues, anxiety, and child behavioral issues. I am an interactive therapist, using evidence-based practices in sessions. My therapeutic approach focuses on identifying triggers, examining your thinking patterns, and together use your strengths to change how you are handling stress, facing problems, and overcoming challenges. I aim at highly personalizing an approach tailored to each individual client. My goal as a counselor is to provide hope, inspiration, and an overall well balanced lifestyle.
